Diabetes and Genetics
Research has shown that Diabetes
patients are more likely to develop the disease if it is
common in their families. There is a genetic
link!
Type
1 Diabetes is usually caused by
environmental factors (chemicals,...) but it may also
develop due to an infection or an unhealthy lifestyle.
Scientists delving into the cause of Type
1 Diabetes have
been able to link the disease to genetics but studies
have also concluded that environmental
stress and/or bad lifestyle is required in order
to acquire Type
1 Diabetes.
However, genetics seems to play a
much larger role in
Type 2 Diabetes. If
some of your close family members or relatives
have developed this type of diabetes, you are much more
at risk of developing diabetes yourself. Being
overweight is one of the main risk factors for
developing
Type 2 Diabetes.
As a result, if obesity runs in your family, you may
already be genetically predisposed to developing
Diabetes.
It is important to remember that just
because someone is at risk of either types of
Diabetes, it does not necessarily mean that this will
occur. Most researchers believe that environment
and lifestyle are greater contributing factors than
genetics. So, no matter what your
family history is, exercise and eat a healthy diet! |
