Type One Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes, also known as
Juvenile or Insulin Dependent Diabetes, is an autoimmune
disease normally found in people under 30. With an
autoimmune disease, our T-cells (white blood cells),
which are responsible for defending the body against
bacteria, tumors and malignant cells don't function
properly. In fact, the T-cells attack and destroy
the healthy cells in the pancreas which produces
insulin. As a result, the pancreas will
produce little or no insulin which will result in
diabetes. Unfortunately, a cure has not been found
for this disease as no one has been able to determine
the exact cause. There is nothing that could have
been done to prevent Type 1 Diabetes!
Type 1 diabetes must be closely
monitored and kept under control with regular
insulin injections, change in lifestyle and accurate
testing of sugar levels in the blood.
Insulin may be injected by use of a pump which
infuses preset levels of insulin into the body during
the course of a normal day. Unfortunately, this
may have to go on for an indefinite period of time. |
